A correction beats everything else

Is something here out of date, or just flat wrong? That message beats every other kind that reaches this inbox.

It does not have to be polite, and you do not need to be sure of yourself. Name the page you are looking at. Then say what you believe the real answer is. If the law, the form or the app's own terms are open in front of you, paste in the link.

Two kinds go stale fastest, so they matter most.

An app changed its rules. Payment companies rewrite who can be paid and announce nothing. If a page here says one thing and the app in your hand says another, tell me, and send the screen.

A state changed its law. These get rewritten quietly and often. One of the pages on this site exists purely because a state law was repealed in 2018 and half the internet never noticed.

Anything wrong here gets repaired, and the date on that page moves. Where the repair changes what you were being told, a line about it stays on the page.

It comes to the person who writes the pages. There is nobody else it could go to.

What cannot be answered from here

This is not a place to get legal advice about your own situation. It cannot be. A writer wrote this site, not a lawyer and not an accountant.

The question that arrives most is some version of this one:

Is what I am doing legal in my state?

The honest answer is always the same, and you are not going to love it. You have to check your own state. Not because of caution. Because that is genuinely where the answer is.

Nearly everything on this site moves depending on where you stand. Whether you need a licence. Whether you can be the one who files for a company. What you can sell if you cooked it at home. Whether the sale gets taxed. Some of it moves by county underneath the state.

So a reply saying yes or no would be a guess wearing a website's authority. That is worse than nothing, because you would act on it.

What every page here does instead is show you the exact wording, name the office that publishes it, and tell you what to search for your own state. Then you take that to an adult.

Also off the table: whether a specific customer is going to sue you, whether a particular company is legitimate, and what any official will decide about anything.

What does get answered

Which page covers a thing. What a page actually meant. Whether a question that is missing here should be added.

That last one is worth sending. A few pages on this site are only here because a reader asked something it had missed.

If you are 15 and stuck, that is a fine reason to write. Just know that the reply will point you at a source and at an adult, because that is all it can honestly do.

If something is happening right now and it is urgent, this page is far too slow. Nobody sits at the other end of it. Go to staying safe instead.

The standing no

Four requests turn up over and over. All four get the same reply, and it has never changed.

• Guest posts and articles somebody else wrote.
• Link exchanges, including the friendly opener about a broken link on one of my pages.
• Paid placement, paid mentions, and being added to any list.
• Any deal at all where a formation service, a course, an app or a payment company buys itself a write up here, for money or access or a free anything.

Not one of them has ever paid a penny into this site, and none ever will. There is nothing noble in that. It is simply the whole reason these pages are any use to you.
